CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Chapter 23

4-What do you think of Atticus's reaction to Bob Ewell's challenge? Should he have ignored Bob, retaliated or done something else?

5-What is “circumstantial evidence”? What has it got to do with Tom's conviction?

6-What does Atticus tell Scout about why the jury took so long to convict Tom?

1-Why does Aunt Alexandra accept that the Cunninghams may be good but are not “our kind of folks”? Do you think that people should mix only with others of the same social class? Are class-divisions good or bad for societies?

2-At the end of this chapter, Jem forms a new theory about why Boo Radley has never left his house in years. What is this? How likely is it to be true, in your opinion?

Jem thinks that the reason Boo Radley never leaves his house is because he wants to stay away.I think that Jem means that Boo doesn't want to be appart of all the hate thats in Maycomb and that its better just to hide so that he never has to deal with any of the drama. I think that Jem could be true on his theory about Boo hiding.

I think Atticus did the right thing, he made Bob look stupid. It also made Bobs challenge look stupid too. I do think Atticus could have done it a little different though, i think this because by not responded a little different it looks like Attius doesn't really think Bob will do what he says he will which will make Bob want tot do his challenge even more.

Atticus told Scout it took so long because they didn't know wether the were lieing or just trying to get a black man in trouble.

Aunt Alexandra says that the Cunnighams may be kind at times but they are all Trash. I think everyone should mix around to meet new people because you could learn a lot about religions and who knows maybe your best friend is someone completely different than you in a different mix. But if you don't mix than you might not end up meeting your best friend!

  6. 5) Circumstantial evidence means that the person is being accused based on evidence that cannot be backed up. In other words, circumstantial evidence means that you can infer that the person did something wrong, but you can't prove it outright.

In Tom's case, he went into Mayella's house, so he was there around the time that she was attacked. Also, Bob Ewell saw Tom and Mayella kiss, which was definitely not allowed back then. That doesn't mean that Tom was the one who attacked Mayella, but that is how the prosecution makes their accusation. Tom's "guilt" is based on his presence in the Ewell home, the kiss, and his race. The jury feels that he should not have been in a white woman's home when she was home alone, and they also feel that since he is African-American he is more likely to hurt someone or try to rape Mayella than anyone else would be. They do not consider that Mayella kissed Tom, but assume it was the other way around. This is why they convict him, even though they do not have actual proof that Tom hurt Mayella.
