CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Chapter 26

6-In her lesson on Hitler, Miss Gates says that “we (American people) don't believe in persecuting anyone”. What seems odd to the reader about this claim?

1-Why is Scout puzzled by Miss Gates' disapproval of Hitler?

2-Why does Scout's question upset Jem? Is there a simple answer, or any answer, to the question (“How can you hate Hitler an’ then turn around an be ugly about folks right at home?”

Scout's question upsets Jem because she talks about the courthouse and earlier in the book Tom Robinson's trial took place there and he didn't win and then he was later killed. Jem really wanted Tom to win and it really hurt Tom that he didn't. So Tom is just trying to shove away that terrible memory so he doesn't have to deal with it but Scout brought on the subject which upset Jem. That is why Scout's question upset Jem.

Ummm....I think that Scout is a bit puzzled becasue she hears Mrs. Gates say one thing outside of the court house and a different thing inside the classroom.
