CHAPTER ELEVEN

Chapter 11

How does Atticus advise Jem to react to Mrs. Dubose's taunts?

What does Mrs. Dubose say about the children's mother? How does Jem feel about this?

What request does Mrs. Dubose make of Jem? Is this a fair punishment for his “crime”?

Explain in your own words what Atticus thinks of insults like “nigger-lover”. How far do you agree with him?

Why, in Atticus's view, was Mrs. Dubose “a great lady”?

Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of real courage rather than “a man with a gun in his hand”. What does he mean? Do you think he is right?

Chapters ten and eleven are the last two chapters in the first part of the book. Explain why Harper Lee chooses to end the first part here.

Atticus says that all of the insults he gets like "nigger-lover" don't bug him because he loves everyone and he won't let the other people get him down. I agree with Atticus because you should never let what anyone says get you down or change you.

Atticus means that Mrs. Dubose has the courage enough to say what she's thinking, not that she says it to stirr up trouble. I think Atticus is right. Every one is entitled to thier own opinion, she's just more upfront about it. That is why i think Atticus said it, and if i thought he was right.

Mrs. Dybose sadi to the children that " A lovelier lady than your mother never lived". Jem was upset because his mother wasn't with him any more, but its a shocker he felt upset because most of the time he was furious with Mrs. Dubose and what she said.

  4. What request does Mrs. Dubose make of Jem? Is this a fair punishment for his “crime”?

Mrs. Dubose tells Jem that every Saturday he would have top come and clean and try to fix the flowers plus he would have to come every day to read to her for 2 hours. I think he deserves to go every Saturday to try and fix the flowers, but i think it's unnecessary to come every day to read to her.

  5. Why in Atticus's view was Ms. Dubose "a great lady"?

He thinks that Ms. Dubose is "a great lady" because she was a very strong, courageous, opinionated person. she said what she thought whether she was wrong or right she stood up for what she believed in. That's why Atticus thinks Ms. Dubose was "a great lady".
