CHAPTER TEN

Chapter 10

Scout says that “Atticus was feeble”. Do you think that this is her view as she tells the story or her view when she was younger? Does she still think this after the events recorded in this chapter?

In this chapter Atticus tells his children that “it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”. What reason does he give for saying this?

Why does Heck Tate not want to shoot Tim Johnson?

Near the end of this chapter Atticus cuts off Heck Tate as he is speaking to Jem. What might Heck have been about to say, and why would Atticus want to stop him from saying it?

Jem and Scout have different views about telling people at school how well Atticus can shoot. Explain this difference. Which view is closer to your own?

Jem and Scout may have different views about how Atticus can shoot because they thought their dad was boring, but when they found out that he could shoot they thought there was maybe a little more to Atticus then they thought. That might be why they have differnt views about Atticus.

  2. Why does Heck Tate not want to shoot Tim Johnson?

Heck doesn't want to shoot Tim Johnson because he has to kill him in one shot or else Tim could get scared or angry and run towards Heck and Atticus. Heck gets Atticus to shoot Tim because everyone knows Atticus as "Ol' One-Shot" because he can kill anything in just one shot. That is why Heck Tate doesn't want to shoot Tim Johnson.

I believe this is her point of view as she tells the story. Scout realizes with Miss Maudies help that Atticus isn't really feeble, he can do anything he chooses to do and he just chooses not to play tackle football.

Atticus says this becuse Mocking Birds only make us beautiful music to listen too, they do not eat at peoples gardens, they don;t rest in the corn bribs. They only give us beautiful music so that's why it's a sin.

Heck Tate was about to say about how Atticus was one the best shooters ever. Atticus stopped him because he doesn't like his kids playing with guns and he doesn't want them knowing about him and being one of the with a gun. That's what Heck Tate was about to day and that's why Atticus didn't want him to say anything.
