Chapter 9

How well does Atticus feel he should defend Tom Robinson? Is it usual for (white) lawyers to do their best for black clients in Alabama at this time?

Scout and Jem have “mixed feelings” about Christmas? What are these feelings and why?

Uncle Jack Finch tells Scout that she is growing out of her pants. What does this mean and why might he say it?

When Francis talks to Scout he reveals an unpleasant feature of Aunt Alexandra. What is this?

Does Scout learn anything from overhearing Atticus's conversation with Uncle Jack? What might this be?

Uncle Jack Finch told Scout that she is growing out of her pants because she is growing up very fast and Uncle jack doesn't get to see her very often and when he does she just keeps getting bigger and bigger. This is what Uncle Jack ment by Scout growing out of her pants.

she learned from over hearing he uncle Jacks conversation with Atticus that Atticus promised not to tell Atticus about what children have been saying about Atticus. Just as he promised Uncle jack didn't end up breaking his promise.

Atticus siad in the book " all lawyers defend negroes, but everyone around town thinks he shouldn't defend Tom Robinson". Atticus must defend Tom Robinson though because if he didn't Jem and Scout wouldn't have to obay him any longer.

  5. Scout and Jem have “mixed feelings” about Christmas? What are these feelings and why?

Scout and Jem do have different feelings about Christmas because, they love the x-mas tree, love to see Uncle Jack Finch. Plus they love that he gets to stay for a week. They dislike there Aunt Alexandra and her husband because they have never acknoledge Scout or Jem, so they don't see the point in acknowledging them. Plus Scout doesn't like his cousin Francis.
